Kumano Kodo

Kumano Kodo is a network of ancient routes that connect the Koya and Yoshino to Kumano, Ise, Osaka and Wakayama.
Designated routes include Ise-ji, Hongu-do, Kii-ji, Nakahechi, Oohechi, Kohechi and Oomune-michi.

This park features 725 domestic varieties and 184 imported varieties of camellia (tsubaki), Owase’s official city flower, as well as nearly 300 individual plants of Camellia japonica.

Sabaru Island (Moomin Island)

This little island (4.65 hectares) at head of Owase Bay is covered in warm temperate evergreen forest. Visitors can see black pine, red pine, chinquapin and rapanaea as well as anodendron and nagi orchids. The heron colony, comprised of grey herons, night herons, Pacific reef herons as well as egrets, is thought to be the largest in Japan. The nickname ‘Moomin Island’ refers to the island’s silhouette, which looks similar to the character Moomintroll taking a nap.
